Free-spirited Vermont Lady Accepts Jesus (Almost)
Good morning everybody. This week was cool. Also, happy birthday to my wonderful mother!
It started with touring the Elmina slave castle last Monday. It was really sad. Apparently over 7 million slaves went through that castle.
Partway through the tour we got to the first church built in Africa outside of Ethiopia. If you want to know about the first one, hit up Elder Evans. While in there we had a kind of awkward conversation about Christianity with our tour guide and a free spirit lady from Vermont. We got to testify of Christ and our tour guide told the Vermont lady that we could "lay hands on her" and pray for her right there so she could accept Jesus Christ. It was a really awkward 35 seconds before the subject changed.
In other, more spiritual news, we had our baptism this week! Helena and Elizabeth were baptized and it was so nice. It was a process to get things going though. Our chapel doesn't have a baptismal font, so we arranged with members at another nearby chapel to do the baptism there at 1 p.m. on Saturday.
At 10:30 a.m. on Saturday, we got a call from them saying that the water wasn't working so we couldn't do the baptism there! We scrambled to get another place and luckily we were able to do so. It ended up being the Cape Coast chapel, which is in my first area! It was awesome to go back there and the baptism went perfectly. The members we invited still came and it was great.
Speaking of members, one awesome lady in our ward named Edith helped us teach Helena twice this week. We've been using a young woman named Charlotte to translate but we wanted some Relief Society members to know her, so we asked Edith if she could help. She accepted, but it was obviously a sacrifice to add another assignment to her already busy life. We were worried that we'd disturbed her.
However, on Sunday she bore her testimony and said how grateful she was for the opportunity and that she had learned so much! I was so happy. Doing the Lord's work isn't easy, especially when it's not your full-time life the way it is for us missionaries, but the blessings are the same. That was a cool thing to witness.
Sunday was just a cool day all around. After church we taught a lesson at the chapel, then went around to some other people. We had a dinner appointment at 5 and just ran completely out of people to see by 4. We were puzzling over who we could see when Sister Sabina popped into our heads. She's a sister we haven't taught much and is usually too busy for us. When we called though, she was very happy. She said she had just been thinking about us and that she would love for us to come teach her.
We went and it was amazing. We told her that Jesus Christ's church was restored through the prophet Joseph Smith and she was like, "Wow. Why have I never heard about this before?" We just kind of smiled and were like yeah, that's why we're here. She promised to come to church not this Sunday but the next Sunday.
It was a great week. I love being a missionary and have felt so much peace and joy over the last 7 days. God is there and he loves us. I love you all!
Love,
Elder Johnson
