Baptism (and banku)

Image
So I wrote a really long email that got deleted on accident and I'm out of time but here are pictures! Justina and Sandra were baptized and it was quite possibly the best day of my life. The gospel is true and it works. It changes people. Feed the missionaries! Love,  Elder Johnson

Eating for Two

Hello my friends! This week was spectacular. Our friend Helena was baptized on Saturday! It was so happy. It was a group baptism which is new to me, but apparently common here. They just read the names of people being baptized off one by one and 5 people were baptized. It was awesome. Helena is such a powerful lady and is going to do so much good.  One thing I've learned this week is to always KEEP TRYING! Even when things aren't going your way, never stop trying. My testimony of that is increasing. God loves our efforts and even when we are confused about fante or food or anything like that, we are blessed when we try.  Speaking of food and trying, I have been blessed. This week my companion and I had dinner with a member, and I ate all of my fufu AND all my companion's fufu. He wasn't feeling well and couldn't eat his but luckily, I am really really good at eating and could help him out. A few weeks ago, I had a hard time swallowing any fufu at all, so I...

Hello from Cape Coast

Howfah my friends. All is well in Ghana. I hope you know I love you all and I'm praying for you. Some scattered musings from the mind of Elder Johnson: • MY SISTER GOT MARRIED! So exciting. I had a smile on my face the whole week thinking about how happy her and my brother Mason are going to be. I'm sure most of you already know but I thought I'd share anyway. My apartment mates and companion are tired of hearing about it haha.  • We will hopefully have two baptisms this week on Saturday, so please pray for Jestina and Helena!  • People in Ghana are so nice. Like even people we don't know will stay hello • MEMBERS LEAD MISSIONARY WORK! We've had some amazing referrals this week. Share what you love with others!  I know the church is true and that he will support us through our trials. He'll never leave us alone.  Love,  Elder Johnson   1. Desi and Mason! 2. Me, Elder Komiha, and Coconta (a yummy cassava dish a member fed us) 3. ...

This Is a Great Work

Image
Hello friends! This has been a week of firsts. I ate fufu for the first time tonight. I finished my first packet of doxy (which is an antimalarial drug we take daily) this morning. And I finished my first can of shaving cream today as well, so I'm officially a grown up.  This week was busy! We had a ton of appointments every day and found lots of new people to teach. We're planning a baptism next Saturday for our friends Jestina and Helena so please pray for them! They're both amazing women and great mothers.  Also, please pray that our YSA aged interested people will want to go to the multi-stake YSA activity on Wednesday. We really want to get some fellowshipping going.  We worked with Brother Paul a ton this week. He's an inspiration, and he submitted his mission papers this week. I'm praying that his call takes a while because he sure helps us a lot here. Most people here are most comfortable speaking Fante, which is a tribal language that me and my companion ...

Chicken Bones and Amazing Members

Hello my friends! Good morning. I hope everything is well with all of you. Thank you all for your prayers and emails. I know that they sustain me.  In this week's email,  I want to tell you about the people of Cape Coast 2nd Ward. There is so much faith here. I've never seen poverty in the US like I have in Ghana, but people are so much happier here. And they're way friendlier! Almost everyone we've talked to attends a church every Sunday. If someone is already committed to Christ and willing to put in the work to follow him, it's a lot easier to teach them.  And the members! Holy cow they're incredible. There are a few I want to highlight: Brother Michael, Sister Sarah, and our friend Paul.  Brother Michael is the only member among his siblings. He was converted to the gospel in 2013ish and served a mission soon after. When he returned from his mission, his number one goal was to help his family receive the gospel. And he's doing that! We've been teac...

My friends! I hope things are going well for each and every one of you. For me, things are great. I am officially in Ghana, in my area, with my companion, and life is good.  On Tuesday morning I left for the mission home with my group of 19. The Accra MTC was delightful. Our 5 days there were due to a scheduling error, but God's hand was in that, as it is in everything.  I've seen that so much this week. My area is just perfect for me. I'm serving in the city of Cape Coast where I will have so many opportunities to grow and grow and hopefully not get hit by a motorcycle or car.  The streets are crazy here. They're very narrow, and everyone drives fast. Motorcycles are much more popular than cars, and everyone drives very fast. Also, horns are very popular and essential to not getting run over. My opinion of being honked at has changed a lot. It's kind of a lifesaver now.  My companion is amazing. His name is Elder Komiha and he's from Zimbabwe. He'...

Hello My Friends!

View from the Ghana MTC Hello! I am happy and healthy. I've done a very good job on the food here (which is yummy, mostly) and the workshops and classes have been awesome. Today we got our residence cards and such so we can stay here legally. It expires in a year though so we'll have to renew it then.  This week has honestly been a happy blur. I've had a great time with all the Ghana boys, and I've been trying to get to know more of the African missionaries as well. It's been good. Everyone is super nice and friendly. There's a lot of missionaries who were baptized three or four months ago and are currently in the MTC. Everyone's spirit is so strong here. Our sacrament meeting and priesthood were amazing. In sacrament meeting we all prepared a talk on the plan of salvation and they just called 6 people out one by one to give them. I really felt the spirit. And I got to go to the Ghana temple!  I've also had the strongest revelation I've ever had here...
